What Is LEAD?
Why Algebra?
Algebra is one of the biggest barriers for students from low socioeconomic neighborhoods such as Compton, CA. It is the foundation to higher level mathematics and if this foundation is not built the chances of applying to college and getting accepted are drastically diminished. The SAT test that every student applying to a four year institution has to take consists of a Reading and Math section. College Board has 3 main categories for the math section which consist of :Heart of Algebra, Passport to Advanced Math, and Problem Solving and Data Analysis. As seen, Algebra is the main focus of this standardized test that colleges look at as a reference when deciding whether admitting them to their institution or not.
LEAD stands for Leadership Education in Algebraic Development and it was established at UCLA during the Fall of 2015 by an undergraduate senior named Tichina Ward-Pratt. The mission of LEAD is to guide students in their development in their ability to interpret and comprehend algebraic concepts. Algebra is the foundation of higher level mathematics and it is essential to invest in building this foundation. LEAD volunteers tutor High School students who are failing, repeating, or struggling with Algebra at King Drew High School located in Compton, CA. Our team of volunteers consists of UCLA undergraduates and we attend site every Monday and Wednesday from 2-5:30 PM-which includes travel time. Transportation IS provided for all LEAD volunteers.
As tutors, we facilitate interactive activities with the students such as team competitions, algebra, jeopardy and algebra bingo. We try to make learning as engaging as possible because that allows for a more positive learning experience
